DUBAI EXPO 2020 TO CREATE AROUND 300,000 NEW JOBS IN UAE
Dubai is set to build the largest Expo site ever at Jebel Ali Dubai World Central (DWC) as hosting the Dubai Expo in 2020. The costs for the event alone will be around 2-3 billion dollars. Additionally, Cynthia Corby, the construction industry leader of Deloitte Middle East, estimated that ‘secondary infrastructure’ will rise to 8 billion dollars, including construction opportunities in the transport, hospitality, retail and commercial sectors.
Dubai aims to attract more international visitors to the expo by investing in hospitality and infrastructure. Dubai metro will be extended to the DWC area and new highways will be constructed. As the event will include mostly of international visitors new hotels and entertainment centers are needed to the Expo area. A massive golf-center including a residential area has been planned to the DWC area. And more similar projects can be expected in order to satisfy international as well as domestic visitors.
The growth in the property and construction sectors will produce a large demand for new workers. Economics estimate that the Expo will create approximately 300,000 new jobs in UAE. Majority of the jobs will be permanent. However about 80,000 jobs will be temporary and 30,000 will be volunteer positions. The Expo is expected to lead to an employment boom in UAE creating new job opportunities in several sectors. Approximately 30 per cent of the new jobs created will be in the construction area. The tourism sector will additionally create numerous of new job opportunities as annual tourist arrivals are expected to increase significantly.
